When we talk about spiritual warfare and the reality of Satan we often can go to one of two extremes. On the one hand we can overhype Satan and believe that he is omnipotent and we are sitting ducks. On the other extreme we can diminish him entirely and act like he is not even there. Both extremes are unbiblical. We do have victory and Satan is very real. What is the answer then? In a word: hope. We are to hope (rest, recline in, trust) God because sin, Satan and death are real. John helps us to see how we do this.
