Glorify God, Live Together, Make Disciples

Preparing for this Sunday at Emmaus (2/7)

This post will help you to prepare for our time together on Sunday morning. The sermon outline and liturgy are posted below for your review before we gather this week.

Title: “Adam’s Probation”
Text: Genesis 2:15-17
Big Idea: The basis for enjoying God’s blessings has always been obedience to his word.
Outline: 3 aspects of God’s relationship to Adam in the Garden of Eden
(1) God created Adam as a morally pure and upright man
(2) God gave Adam work to do in the garden
(3) God gave Adam a test of obedience with clear consequences

Call to Worship: (Psalm 145:1–9, ESV)

“I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts. On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate. They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and I will declare your greatness. They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness and shall sing aloud of your righteousness. The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.”

Confession of Sin: (Psalm 51:1–6, ESV)

“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.”

Assurance of Pardon: (Colossians 2:13–15, ESV)

“And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”

Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
