Weekly Liturgy

And Such Were Some of You

Purpose

Every week, Emmaus leadership creates a liturgy that reflects the truths and themes found in the sermon text. All of the songs, readings, and prayers are meant to thrust us into greater joy and love for God and His Word. Take some time this weekend to read, pray, and quiet your mind. Consider the following theme and scriptures, focus your heart on Christ, pray for your brothers and sisters, prepare for the Sunday morning gathering.

Theme

The people of God must exhibit a radical transformation from their former life.

Call to Worship

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

 2 but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.

 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

 4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;

 6 for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. (Psa 1:1-6)

Confession of Sin

9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. (1Co 6:9-11)

Assurance of Pardon

But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1Co 6:11b)

Sermon Text

17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. (Eph. 4:17-24)
